I think the microblog format is an interesting development in the overall blogging story. Why did it come about? Sometimes I think it's an outgrowth of the struggle of long-time bloggers to keep the content stream flowing on their traditional blogs, which typically require longer, more in-depth posts (like yours).
It's interesting to see the microblog format serve different purposes for different bloggers and audiences. I recently started the PatentMicroBlog on twitter (http://twitter.com/patentmicroblog) to allow me to provide quick pointers to patent-related news and other information that I think practitioners will find interesting. Others use Twitter to run shotgun to their primary blog (sort of like the original linkblogs); while still others use it as a social networking tool.
It will be fun to see where microblogging goes from here, and the effect it has on the overall blogging universe.
