Law Technology Today Post – LinkedIn Endorsements

The ABA’s Legal Technology Resource Center is now part of the ABA’s Law Practice Management Section and I’m on the LTRC board this year. We have some great plans and be sure to keep an eye on LTRC over the next few months as we launch some new initiatives.

One of the things I’ll be doing is contributing at least one guest blog post each month to the Law Technology Today blog, which I recommend subscribing to in Google Reader or your other favorite RSS reader if you have any interest in legal technology at all (which you must, if you are reading this blog).

My first guest post appeared today and it’s called “‘Liking’ Your Connections with the New LinkedIn Endorsements.” Not surprisingly, it’s about the new LinkedIn “Endorsement” feature that makes it it easy to acknowledge the skills of your LinkedIn connections. I like the new feature so far. Check out the post to see why.

There will be a stellar cast of guest bloggers on Law Technology Today, so I definitely recommend it to your attention and to your regular reading list.

Upcoming Facebook for Lawyers Presentation and Webinar

As the number of Facebook users approaches the one billion mark, lawyers are starting to take interest in Facebook and how they might use it.

I’ll be co-presenting with Allison Shields at an upcoming presentation and a webinar on the “Facebook for Lawyers” topic.

First, this Friday, May 4, if you are in the San Francisco area or are attending the ABA Law Practice Management Section’s Spring Meeting in Napa, you can see our live presentation called, simply enough, “Facebook for Lawyers.” Details here.

Second, on May 17, Allison and I will be presenting an ALI-ABA webinar called, simply enough, “Facebook for Lawyers.” Details here.

A Non-Attendee’s Guide to “Attending” ABA TECHSHOW 2012

As I’ve mentioned, my recent bout with a blood clot in my leg is preventing me from attending ABA TECHSHOW 2012, my favorite legal tech conference of the year, later this week. That made me think about ways to “attend” TECHSHOW without actually being there. In fact, Tom Mighell and I talked a bit about this idea in our latest podcast called “Turning TECHSHOW Topics into Technology Agenda.”

The great thing about blogs, social media and especially Twitter these days is that you really can keep up with what’s happening at conferences that interest you. TECHSHOW generates a lot of traffic along these lines, so it’s a great place to see how social media works in connection with a conference.

Blogs. There is a concept known as “live blogging” where bloggers take notes during sessions and post them on their blogs after each session they attend. Some bloggers do an excellent job of this, which I admire, because I simply can’t do this. Watch the blogs of your favorite legal tech bloggers to see what they post. I find that the best blog source for legal tech conferences is JoAnna Forshee’s daily summary posts at the InsideLegal blog. She has already posted “ABA TECHSHOW 2012: What You Need to Know.”

Twitter. TECHSHOW can really help you understand what Twitter is and how it might or might not be useful to you. If you haven’t used Twitter Search much yet, TECHSHOW is a great time to try it. You can search on “TECHSHOW” or the official “#abatechshow.” The latter is what is known as a hashtag. Anyone posting from TECHSHOW can include this hashtag in his or her tweet and everyone can easily find all TECHSHOW-related posts. You might see tweets summarizing key points from sessions and other info from the conference. At TECHSHOW, the volume of tweets can be high and repetitive, but you can get a good feel for what is happening at the conference and capture a fair amount of information content from the show. You can also follow the tweets of certain speakers or attendees. I always enjoy Gwynne Monahan’s high-volume tweets as @econwriter5 and Tom Mighell’s helpful tweets at @tommighell. You’ll be able to identify other quality tweeters to follow by monitoring the Twitter search results.

Other Social Media. Of course, what you will get depends on the connections you have in LinkedIn, Facebook, and other social media platforms, but these platforms can also bring you information from the conference.

Handouts. Tom also pointed out on the podcast that you can also purchase the TECHSHOW conference materials. TECHSHOW has always successfully encouraged speakers to submit quality handout materials.

Participation. Using social media, you can do more than just monitor the conference. You can actually participate in discussions on Twitter, comment on blog posts and the like. You can also invite people to connect on LinkedIn, friend people on Facebook and follow new people on Twitter.

Frankly, all of this is not really the same as being there, but it’s the next best thing and it’s getting better. I’m so disappointed I can’t in person, but I’m happy I have so many ways to be part of TECHSHOW virtually.

Non-Marketing Uses of Social Media for Lawyers

Since Tom Mighell and I haven’t gotten much chance over the last year or so to write together, we jumped at the chance to write an article on “non-marketing” uses of social media for lawyers for the ABA’s Law Practice Today webzine. Then we realized that volunteering to write an article is far easier than finding the time to actually write it.

The result, however, is an article we really liked and one we’ve gotten some great feedback on. It’s called “Not Your Marketer’s Social Media: Ten Ways Lawyers Can Benefit from Non-Marketing Uses of Social Media.

The article grew out of our podcast called “Using Social Media for Non-Marketing” and expands on some of the ideas in the podcast and adds a few new things. The main idea is that lawyers can benefit from social media in many different ways and that the over-attention on using social media for marketing to potential clients has a limiting effect on ways that lawyers think they might use social media. The article is an attempt to “think different” about social media – in practical ways that match your own personality and approach – and to go back to the basics on social media. Then, see what evolves from uses that best fit your own approach and comfort.

We’ll also be talking about some of these ideas as part of a panel with Tim Stanley of Justia called “Social Media: Does Your Firm Marketing Plan Need A Face Lift” at the ABA Law Firm Marketing Strategies Conference 2011 on November 9 in Philadelphia. Announcing a Meetup / Tweetup in Washington, DC

Announcing The Kennedy-Mighell Report Podcast Listener Appreciation Meetup / Tweetup

There’s nothing like a blogger meetup.

I read a great blog post wrap-up about the BlogHer Food conference by my grade school and high school classmate, and now food blogger, “The Italian Dish.” The post reminded me how much fun it is when bloggers get together. And, believe it or not, that’s true even when it’s lawyer bloggers getting together.

So, I wanted to see about doing a meetup, tweetup or similar event. And I saw an opportunity to put together one next week in Washington, DC at the time of the American Bar Association’s Law Practice Management Section’s Fall Meeting (October 20 – 22). It’s actually a great time to be in DC because there are two other interesting law practice management and social media seminars happening at the same time as the LPM Section meeting. The first is the College of Law Practice Management’s 2010 Futures Conference and Symposium (PDF brochure). The second is MyLegal.com’s “The Case for Social Media” seminar (info here). For clarification, I won’t be speaking at or attending either event (duty calls). There should be a good concentration of interesting people for a meetup in DC.

As I tried to figure out a way to do a meetup, who to invite and how to organize, I settled on the idea of doing it nominally as a listener appreciation event for The Kennedy-Mighell Report podcast.

I emailed Tom Mighell to enlist his help and he really liked the idea, too. He liked it even better when I agreed (1) not to anthromorphize our podcast, as I sometimes do, and say that our podcast was actually throwing this event, (2) to do the “planning” for the event, and (3) to write this email to publicize the meetup.

Here’s my plan: We tell you the time and place and assume that the event will be a gathering of the right people at the right place at the right time. In other words, I’m taking an unconference approach to this.

Here are the details:

Date: October 22, 2010 (Friday)
Time: Officially, maybe 7:00-ish PM, but really whenever two or more people show up.

Place: Lobby of the JW Marriott Hotel, 1331 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC (looks like there’s lobby seating and a lounge) – this is the meeting hotel for the ABA LPM meeting.

Who is invited:

1. Listeners (and potential listeners) to The Kennedy-Mighell Report podcast
2. Law-related bloggers (and non-law-related bloggers)
3. Law-related tweeters (and non-law-related tweeters)
4. People interested in law practice management, legal technology and the use of social media by the legal profession
5. Any reader of this blog post (of course)
